C++. Worth it?

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-15 22:57

I am a bit fluent in java, a bit more in python, but i know c++ is the only language that matters. Is it really worth spending the time to learn? It looks so daunting. Maybe some links to some swell tutorials?

You mean C

why is it daunting?

a programmer who doesn't know C or C++?  may as well be a medical doctor who's never heard of alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase amirite

Troll. If not a troll, read: C++ blows, it only matters only for C++--, which matters only for systems programming, big applications everybody use, and performance-critical applications. For non-speed-critical applications, rapid prototyping, etc. Python is a far better, cheaper, faster-to-get-done, comfortable choice and of course a few more powerful language any way you look at it.

If you want to use C++--, start by learning C, the real thing. C++ is for OO pussies and fags, C is where it's at. Once you know C, you learn C++-- from just anywhere.

Once again... A great book on C++, and it's free:

http://www.mindview.net/Books/TICPP/ThinkingInCPP2e.html (2 volumes with everything you need, well, the 2nd volume is weird, I don't think you need it yet)

Put simply I would recommend you spend your time learning trignometry, genometry, algebra, and sets and as much maths as you can possible fit into your head in 1-2 years time.

Then after you've achieved that, any programing challenge will be very simple and you will have the mindset to approach problems in a very natual logical way. From their you can choose which programing tool is best suited to the task.

Their has been soo many programs writen in C++ that no other language comes close to the experience gained and the knowledge aquired. No doubt once you finish high school or University the first thing you will be faced with is 10 million lines of source code with 10 men projects.

Will leave you with the following people to look into.
joel on software
the old new thing

They have a very good representation of the current state of programming and the direction its heading. Would highly recommend reading up on joel and his suggestion to new programmers like yourself.

P.S. Be warned, without a good understanding in mathematics background no matter what tool you use, you will all ways find it lacking. Get the mathematics background, then choose the tool for the job.
