Serious stuff? C++--.

Home stuff? You could use C++--, Python, or even FreeBasic (which sucks as a language, but I've seen good stuff made with it nonetheless).

Good stuff in any flavour of Basic is impossible, it's not portable by definition and that's why it can't have been engineered in a good way. I think it was written in Common Lisp (which IS portable)

FreeBasic is good if you don't need anything even closely resembling object-oriented concepts.  It wins for not being bitchy about syntax like C/C++ and also allowing inline ASM.

C++
End of thread.

I've seen a Geometry Wars game written in FreeBasic which was pretty good stuff, even if the language is shit and the sauce is a turd because it's written in shit.

Java for runescape lololololololol. No seriously, take up C++.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-02 9:24

C++ with as much game logic as possible moved to scripting (lua/python/javascript)

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-02 12:28

FreeBasic is not free for all platforms, therefore it is HUGE fail.

These threads always fail because most of the repliers have no experience with graphics or game engines.

Like what everyone else has said: C++! It may be a bit bitchy, but it is worth it. Check out the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%2B%2B At the bottom it has links to many tutorials and books. Also check out gpwiki.org for C++ and other things related to game programming.

Whips, leather, high-heels, and the whole shebang.

C++ or C

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-04 3:45

C# with XNA is good for hobbyist game developers. I'm writing a game with it now.

Most game studios still use Visual C++, though.

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-04 4:20

I like XNA, but have had problems with the tutorials being full of bullshit that doesn't work

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-04 19:09

Have you upgraded to 1.0? A lot of the tutorials out there are still for Beta 1 or 2.

Although the syntax is wrong, it's supposed to mean C.
