Good stuff in any flavour of Basic is impossible, it's not portable by definition and that's why it can't have been engineered in a good way. I think it was written in Common Lisp (which IS portable)

FreeBasic is good if you don't need anything even closely resembling object-oriented concepts.  It wins for not being bitchy about syntax like C/C++ and also allowing inline ASM.

FreeBasic is not free for all platforms, therefore it is HUGE fail.

These threads always fail because most of the repliers have no experience with graphics or game engines.

C++ or C

C# with XNA is good for hobbyist game developers. I'm writing a game with it now.

Most game studios still use Visual C++, though.

I like XNA, but have had problems with the tutorials being full of bullshit that doesn't work
