Website backup

Name: cyrilthefish !ljAhqzG3aU 2006-10-27 21:50

At the moment i'm hosting the website and main dkp (item databse) sites...

At the moment, said sites get backed up once in a blue moon when i remember to do it... >.<

One of my other friends is completely hopless aat linux, but i think be easily taught how to run a backup cript regualary and save the results...

Heres where you come in... i need a nice bach script that backups a mysql4 database and the apache2 webroot dir and compresses it to an archive with the date added...

I'm not 100% totally hopeless at linux, (ie. managed to set up a working apahce/mysql webserver fine solo) just that i admit admit to being relatively clueless with bash script commands...

Please help me! i can easily re-edit the actual values on a generec bash backup script if nessesary... i just need a way to backup ^^

mysqldump will take care of the database aspect.  I use a custom script that runs in the night to dump/tar/gz numerous databases and email them to my gmail daily.

rsync -Z3 or some shit

When you use mysqldump, I suggest using the --flush-logs option to rotate the binary log (for ease of recovery, if you have the binary log enabled which you should), and to be sure you fetch a consistent database, use --lock-tables if you have MyISAM tables or --single-transaction if you have InnoDB tables.

forget verbose in batch scripts
For tar, something like
tar cjf www-backup`date +"%Y-%m-%d"`.tar.gz /path/to/www
will do the trick.
