Good editor?

Hi! Just got a new hard drive and reinstalled everything. As I was  about to install TextPad again, I realized that it hadn't been updated since 2004, and that it wasn't freeware.

Does anonymous have a suggestion for a good text editor?
Wanted features:
* Syntax highlighting
* Very fast to start (as in not java)
* Free (Open Source would be nice)
* Macro support

Why the fuck would you want to use vi, emacs or any clones thereof?

Get a modern, usable editor and leave 60s unix technology where it belongs - in the past.
