which one?

i'm thinking of learning a desktop programming language. i'm decent with a few browser/server based languages, like php and javascript, but i wanna go beyond that.

so what are the pros/cons of ruby and python, and which should i go with?

Troll gold. No matter how much you call Python and Ruby "scripting languages", it won't be any more true. You can build complete, large-scale web applications, and some desktop applications with them, and they have high level, productive features your favourite language will always lack.
