Ruby on Rails?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-04 19:03

Nay or yay and why? I don't know a drop of Ruby, nor have I heard much praise towards it, but from what I've seen it's pretty cool, and Rails especially is pretty damn robust despite the terribly incomplete documentation on it.

Does anyone here use it and love it and/or have a good tutorial resource or something on hand?

I would suggest you learn it, it's pretty good.  Only downside is that Ruby is the slowest language in existence and you need your own VPS to run a decent-sized app.  That says nothing about the framework itself, which is pretty awesome.

Only problem is that now that I know it, I don't know what to do with my knowledge.

RoR is pretty nifty. And yes it does run slow normally. But if you get FastCGI working then you're good to go.

It's fairly easy to pick up, but hard to master.

You already mentioned the #1 problem with ruby in general, which is that it is badly documented.

Many rubyists use TextMate, which is only available on Mac. It's the only decent editor that offers autocomplete (intellisense for you .NET fags) for ruby.

Good luck, it's a painful process, but in the end, it's better than the J2EE situation, where half the dox refer to old versions.
