cd / dvd file indexes

Name: aWi 2006-08-20 4:27

im looking to write my own little program to help me archive my animu off my hard drive.
Ive got the archiving part down, but i need to output it somehow. The wo possible solutions are to burn it off straight away, or to output to a cd/dvd type file index (like Nero's .nri).

I'd prefer to store the information in something similar to the .nri , so i can burn it off anytime i want in the future.

Question is, how does one write a compatible .nri?

Do the people of 4chan know of any other formats which are viable?

Cuesheets are unusable, as they're made for music and i dont want to burn each file on a separate track.
Also, any iso image types are bad, obviously because im keeping a duplicate copy of the data.
What i mean by file index is a file that points to the various locations of the files i wish to burn, much like a .nri

Any help?

just make a list of files that are line-delimited into a text file, then you can run cdrecord or whatever over it

Not what you want, but have you actually considered using external 300 GB hard disks for backup? Consider the following:

● Price not much higher than equivalent quality DVD+Rs.
● Random access - read and write anytime, with no special software; can run software that needs to write to disk; no need to ready compilations.
● Keep (probably) ALL of your content in a single volume. Where's this series? This disk. Where's this another series? This disk, too. No need to waste time looking for or swapping DVDs. Plus DVD readers are retarded and take up aeons spinning down, then spinning up, then down, then up, then down, then up, then down, then up, and their drivers are about as retarded when they face read errors.
● Smaller storage requirements, and easier to carry around. "Hey Bub, what series will you bring to vacation?" "All"
● Easier to backup into another hard disk because you don't have to change discs.

Also, hard disks live much longer.

hard drives need power to upkeep,
need a good raid card.
raid card can die.
needs attached computer.
limited by the # of hard disks.

but yeh im building a file server too XD.
this software im building is for ease of archive of animu , but also to learn : java, xml, java's jni and whatever else.

Get external ones.

why would you need a raid card for an internal drive anyway?
sata'll support all the drives you need, and as for the error redundancy argument, just keep tabs on the S.M.A.R.T. and add new drives when necessary

What the fuck? None of these reasons make any sense. "hard drives need power"? "needs attached computer"? No shit genius, so does a DVD-rom. You don't need a raid card; you can SATA or external. And counting external, can't you put like nine harddrives on a normal PC?

5 5-port USB 2.0 PCI slots = 25 USB ports + up to say, 10 USB 2.0 ports on modern motherboard = 35 USB ports = 35 external USB
drives.

prolly not enough irq's though

external hdd's dont have redundancy.

while one may argu that SMART *might* help, usually its either too late, or they die in accidents, especially the case with ext. hdd's.

E.g. i lent it to a friend, who was dickhead and dropped it.

SMART warnings are meant to warn when the drive is close to failure, but at this point, the drive may start to give read errors.

redundancy will solve all those problems.. (well unless you have a house fire)

Hi2u, ever heard of GNUWin32?

He probably hasn't, most Windows users are retarded beyond measure and use Cygwin or unxutils when all they want can be acquired so much easier by using GnuWin32.
