Dreamweaver and .cgi? Help :/

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-23 2:30

Problem with DW:

 - There is a web site, with a page using the .cgi extension.

 - I save this page to my HD, and it seems to magically become a "pagenamehere.cgi.htm".

 - I open this in DW, make all of my changes, and then...discover that DW apparently does not have a .cgi extension option for the drop-down under save-as. It seems to have everything /but/.

So, crap. What am I supposed to do to make this page turn into a .cgi? I encountered this exact problem with .php pages, but DW has a save-as option for .php, so that saved my bacon. Yet, no .cgi.

Very confused! Shit! Help! :(

Umm. Rename it to .cgi.

Don't use WYSIWYG editors for web pages.

Or anything else.

just in case you're not just trolling, RTFM:
http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/cgi/
http://www.w3.org/CGI/

Does nothing, of course.

Little late for that?

I don't see where that answers my question. And no, I'm not trolling. I'm really that goddamned clueless!

Just thought I'd make my response to this more clear: It's already a .cgi.htm file. Renaming it with .cgi does nothing, because windows still thinks it's an .htm file - /it's already renamed to .cgi, and that does nothing/.

server executes cgi/php/etc -> server sends resulting html to browser -> you save the page from your browser -> you now have a html page.

there is no way to get the original source back from the html.

if you actually want us to help you'd have to explain what you want to do with the saved html file.

I'm editing the boring .html bits (links, etc) and changing all of the words from english to chinese. The entire site is being translated, and I'm stuck on this .cgi page.

ok, but what do you want to do with the result? just publish the translation somewhere? in that case just keeping it as a html file should work. if you're worried about links from other pages, renaming it to .cgi should take care of that.

and if the page needs parameters, you will probably need to contact the site owner for the actual source code.

No, I want it to go back onto the site and still work correctly :[

Then you'll need to download the site content through FTP and not through your browser. Also, use a normal text editor.
