Why all the hate for VB?

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-25 14:42

Seriously. If you're a linuxer, I guess I can see the point; but most people (even here) use some form of windows...so what's wrong with using a windows-specific language? Is it that VB makes things "too easy" and therefor takes out the 'leet' factor? Is it because your boss likes it? Is it just more of the usual  "omg it's from microsoft and microsoft is teh sux" hatred?

Have any of you people who bitch about it even *tried* the recent versions?

For the next year you can get it fro free and I'm playing around with it; I think it's a lot better than people give it credit for being.

1. Only a complete idiot would consider VB.NET and VB6 the same language.
2. VB6 is missing language constructs and builtin functionality that encourages you to roll your own constantly.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-25 15:40

Huh? VB6? I'm talking about visual basic express.

Shitty syntax, shitty semantics. Shitty language. I program VB for a living btw. Hopefully not for much longer. It's less powerful than Java, and not many languages can say that.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-26 3:09

VB is an awesome language if you the application you're working on is simple and/or lightweight. Other than that, VB programs are usually really slow and limited.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-26 19:10

First: No. "Most" people here do not use windows. Most don't.

Anyway, for reasons, how about the fact it's a pathetic language in every way to begin with; dumb syntax, pathetic error handling, no object-orientation. And on this pathetic piece of crap they've just layered on more and more and more of the same.

There is NO reason TO use VB. There's plenty of reasons not to.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-27 1:47

>>6 I suppose you prefer languages where you have to roll everything yourself, then? Something like c or assembly or java where you can show off that you're a real man? Me? I just want to make a simple app here and a simple app there, I don't guage my pen0r size by the language I use.

I can start up VB express and in 15 minutes I have most of the ground work laid out for what I want to make (granted I'm not attempting to make enterprise-level or web 2.0 applications). In java or assmbly it would take days!

Mind you, I'm not taking away from any other language; just trying to say maybe it's time to re-evaluate the accuracy of the perception that visual basic is not enterprise quality.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-27 3:26

maybe it's time to re-evaluate the accuracy of the perception that visual basic is not enterprise quality
Microsoft agrees with you. That's why they've been hinting at VB shops that maybe they should start using D-flat instead. The only reason why they made VB.NOT at all is to give the illusion that people would be able to port their old VB6 apps. They want to dump the language entirely if possible.

Shitty syntax, missing features, the disadvantages of high-level scripting languages without the advantages of high-level scripting languages. Don't give two bits a damn about semantics, it just sucks from a practical point of view.

>>6
I'm pretty sure most use Windows at either work or home.

OO is not necessarily good, and no OO is not necessarily bad, unless it's your religion.

In music theory, Db and C# are not the same note - they differ by a very small amount.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-27 12:43

>>11
in music theory, it's D♭ and C♯.

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-27 19:40

Really? This is the first time ever I've hear of such a thing. Wouldn't a 12 notes octave sound best?

Wins for proper characters.

whether you use a sharp or flat in the notation depends on what key you are in or leading towards.

WOW WE HAVE A MUSIC BAORD NOW? AWSUM

been there for a while now, actually. You should pay more attention to the sidebar, maybe??

Name: Anonymous 2006-02-28 3:48

Yeah but isn't that just arbirarily set to make music notation even more insane? I thought any halftone frequency was the same, i.e. C and a half would be the same frequency than D minus a half?

Don't forget Mac users. VB is pretty useless for us too.

Pathetic attempt at trolling, there are GUI creation tools for every programming language out there and every platform, this is not limited to "VB on Windows"

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-02 10:23

>>23
Most GUI creation tools suck, though. Glade is good but nobody in their right mind would use GTK if they were developing an app that wasn't primarily for Linux.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-02 11:00

>>24
Don't think so, GTK on Windows sucks, but it sucks less than it does on Linux, so it's not like you won't use it just because you want a Windows version.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-02 18:26

>>21
If you're implying that equal temperament sucks, I for one am with you.

>>24
Wouldn't they? What would they use?
wx-"o noes we ripped a shitty API to begin with"-Widgets?
AWT/Swing/SWT? (these acronyms all translate more or less to "I want to hit my gonads repeatedly with a hammer LA LA LA")
Even more exotic and experimental projects?

Maybe QT... but it's a close call.

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-03 2:34

>>26 exactly; that's why I say that if you're going to develop a windows application easily, VB is probably the best GUI creation tool; of course, if you're a linuxer you already know xforms and can write them in c and shit so you don't need VB; but for those of us who are just hobbyists, VB is a godsend!

From a Jew's face
The wicked Devil speaks to us,
The Devil who, in every country,
Is known as an evil plague.

Would we from the Jew be free,
Again be cheeful and happy,
Then must youth fight with us
To get rid of the Jewish Devil.
