The tutorial is accurate; RMI is made of fail and shit too.
When we did it our lecturer (who judging by his coding style was a C hacker - and I mean that as a compliment) gave us a very simple skeleton app so we could immediately see how the pieces link together, and use it as a starting point to build our own programs. That doesn't help you of course...

I had to use Java3D(tm) in one module when I was at uni. Holy fucking shit it's hard to use! You have to define everything from the universe to its individual atoms, and all the relationships between them before you can get to the task of actually drawing shit on the screen.
