fails for unnecessary use of cat

strings blah

okay... i don't know any world4ch memes... stop making fun of me, will you? anyone knows how sogna compress their text files inside the SGS.dat file?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-11 13:03

It's not a meme, 'strings' is a UNIX command that prints text strings in a file.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-11 15:02

sorry for being such a dick... but i'm trying to help a friend ( he uses win) so... how do i open them using windows?

Told you, strings. I think it's part of the GNU binutils and if you can't find a native port try Cygwin.

Awesome! Just what the world needs: a tranlation of rape-fetish ero game.

Go fuck your sister.

Thanks for all the constuctive replies!
But...
The strings command only finds uncompressed string data in a file, and I don't think it works too well with non-roman languages liek Japanese anyway.  In any case, I've already tried that. No luck.

any other suggestions?

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-12 18:07

Search for keywords and the file name on Google. I sometimes find obscure Romanians or someone who's already hacked it.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-13 7:25

thanks for the suggestion... but what i really need is a way to put the translated text back in the dat file, exchanging it with the japanese one.

Name: Anonymous 2005-12-14 13:15

Then you don't want to just extract text, you want to hack text. You can do so with an hex editor, although I don't know of any that will support Japanese text. You can't make the file larger or smaller; you have to fit the available space and pad the rest with spaces or U+3000. If you want to replace Western text by Japanese text, pray the application is Unicode, otherwise it'll probably not work. It sucks if it's not Unicode anyways.

It's a different story if you actually know how's the structure of that DAT file (which I assume is an archive) and you can use/write a utility to extract and add files to it.

BTW, if you still want to dump its text (probably western text only), try this utility:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Strings.html

the text is not encoded in any standard format. I've tried searching for Unicode, EUC, JIS-X, and Shift-JIS. The Viper games use none of these.

I really do not know what to do next! Mighty Brains of world4ch...help me!

i poked around in sgs dat and it looks like this
//SGS.DAT format
//all values in little-endian format
char magic[12]; // always "SGS.DAT 1.00"
int32 num_entries;
( char filename[16]; // padded with nulls e.g. "ANM\\B02.ANM\0\0\0\0\0"
  int32 type; //always 1 as far as i've seen
  int32 length; // filesize in bytes
  int32 unknown; // i don't know what this is for :(
  int32 offset; // offset of the file, in bytes, within sgs.dat
) //repeat num_entries times;
data follows

there's an "SGS.DAT divider" program that you can find from google, but the only files that are in SGS.DAT are "pcm", "anm", and "win". pcm i think is maybe RLE wave data, anm is most definitely graphics but might contain text too, and win contains text but it might just be a window definition.

My program already splits the .dat file into the anm,
win, and pcm files. I'm looking for something that will decompress the anm
and/or win files. Yes pcm is some kind of RLE, and it might be nice to be able
to decompress that, but its much lower priority to the win and anm files.

any other suggestions?

Never heard of those formats, if they're compressed, then you're out of luck

Anyone still interested in seeing VIPER RSR translated?
Right now I'm deciphering the scripts

RSR has no compression, except for the image ANM files
WIN files are the scripts (also holds the text), and PCM are uncompressed audio files

Text is encoded in the S-JIS Character Encoding

I can't believe nobody has made a VIPPER joke yet

so anyways.....

viper mode and gtfo, also, we are interested

Name: BlackShadowz 2007-07-16 2:06 ID:h+bIqZe0

here's my notes on the WIN files, that are needed to edit

http://forum.hyperguy.net/index.php?board=9.0

a topic called BlackShadow's Research Notes

once I can decipher enough codes, we can edit the text, I dont think we need to know all the codes, just the codes that are needed to stop the game from crashing
like JumpTo[xxxx], Compare[xx]JumpTo[xxxx]....etc
we can pretty much leave every other code the way it is...

Wow.. this is still around?!?

Anyways...
We pretty much got everything for the recent Viper games... sans M5.. i think

-WIN scripts (currently identifying OP codes, have enough to hex edit manually)
-ANM files (extracting and injecting frames, heck can even build our own ANM files now)

A hacked debug version of the SGS.exe game engine,
to allow the games to be played with uncompressed and unarchived files...
easier to edit scripts and check out the results..

We just need to start translating the texts...

-------
research into the PC98 roms are proving quite a difficult task..
almost like it's going no where... :S
