Bachelor's degree

Name: Lonely Ecchi !xeYMn7I3qc 2005-10-01 7:19

Okay, I just finished my diploma (Information Technology) studies, now I must choose and submit what my next degree course in the next 3 days.. I am really in a pinch and perhaps you guys can give me some insight view.

I have list out 3 of possibility for me..

1.BIT (Hons.) Security Technology(ST) -
Potential Career Prospects: Security Expert, Software Engineer, Systems Analyst, and Programmer.

2.BIT (Hons.) Data Communication (DC)-
Potential Career Prospects:  Network Engineer, Network Administrator

3.BIT (Hons.) Information Technology Management (ITM)-
Potential Career Prospects:  MIS Managers/Executives, IT Resource Manager/Executives.

I am more leaning towards Security technology but my dad say its better for me to take Data communication as it offer more job opportunity than ST.

Please give me some hint or whatever your opinion is.

Congratulations.  You're making significant life decisions at the behest of completely random strangers on the internet in (of all places) a haven of pr0n.

That aside...

(1):  Pick it if you're technically oriented and like the truly deep guts of how things work.  And an average $50k/year (US) starting salary in the midwest.  That number's higher on the coasts, but they also have a higher cost of living.  Don't pick (1) unless you're truly a geek and enjoy immersing yourself in difficult problems.

(2)  Useful info regardless, net techs make good money.  Pick this if you're more of a "people" person and would rather go out drinking on a thursday night than spend it studying.  (Note Thursday, not Friday.  Everybody'd rather be out drinking on Friday, right?)

(3)  This is the route for people with pointy hair.  Pick this class if you have some evil genetically grown into you.  Understand that such a career will curse you with the task of managing people who will shun you and consider you a fool.  This is the route you want to take if you're academically-*dis*oriented.  Anybody who expects you to understand what you're talking about when you have one of these jobs is either a hopeless romantic or completely green.  Understand, also, that you have absolutely no concept of what makes your technical workers tick in this situation.  Your teachers are all wrong--- their cute little tips for "motivating" people will do nothing but earn you derision for your transparent attempts at making people who are smarter than you do what you want them to do instead of what they know they should do to successfully complete their tasks.

ISE sounds like so much bullshit.  What the hell is it?

SE is closely related to (1)

BIS is likely what you'll be doing when you graduate, whether you want to or not.  Sucker.

AI is a happyland for dreamers and researchers.  If you're not going to grad school and getting a PhD (or at least an MS), don't bother.  (Perceptrons can make pretty solid junk-mail/spam filters, though!)

ISE - Potential Career Prospects:  Information Systems Analyst, Database Administrator or Analyst or Developer.

Full description (and my study place) is at http://tinyurl.com/8qxmm.

Indeed there are Computer Science Offered but that falls under different Faculty, and I am not really interested coz many other Uni offered that course.

Well, under the same faculty (IT), there also offered courses like Software Engineerinf, Knowledge Eng., Software & Animation, Sotfware Eng. & Game design.. but I think I am gonna stick to "coller & necktie* rather than "numbers & codes".

BIS offered COBOL subject.. aren't that a little, OLD?

Thanks for the reply

I recommend you to choose what you like best. You'll be working for half of your life on it (consider you're sleeping ~8 hours), so you'll need to like it. Liking the job is far more important than the pay. And it's the only way for success.

That said, don't go for pure AI unless you know what you're doing, and you're getting a PhD, otherwise you'll still find jobs, but not the jobs you want.

Now:

ST: Sounds interesting, although I'm not a security person myself. Worth a look if you like development.

DC: If you want to become a technician as opposed to developer. BTW Anon #4, real geeks never drink. Besides, friday night is great for programming, nobody calls or bothers you.

ITM: Sux

ISE: Is this an euphemism for web development, by any chance? You may want this if you like development.

SE: Sounds like a more orthodox development path. You may want this if you like development.

BIS: Go for this if you like working on boring ass COBOL code up till 10 PM in a dark corner at some huge company, and you like boring ass bank stuff.

AI: You must really love AI to do this, beware of lots of Math (esp. statistics) included (oh, but you actually need it for this career, woohoo!), and try to get a PhD and work at an university. It can get to be the best job in the universe, but be careful; you could become the best unemployed person in the universe easily.

Tell that to Linus, I hear he enjoys the odd pint of Guinness.

Reason why I choose Security Technology in the first place is I am interested in the subject itself. If I am taking this, its more towards learning purpose (that University is suppose to be anyway). Of course my country is still a developing country and perhaps there will be some room for this field of work.

But by the looks of it.. maybe I am going to take DC, because I think the wider job selection in market. I liked DC courses as well and I can live with it..or so I think

That's why I am in a 50/50 state to choose between those two.

THANK YOU! The only good answer here: choose what you like best! That's what I did and I don't regret it, I have a very interesting job. When I'm back home, I can still study other things I appreciate (like AI or functional programming), I'm not stuck by what I studied.
