Anyone know of any Scheme modules with bindings for Tk/GTK/Qt/OpenGL/any-damn-thing-i-can-use-to-put-stuff-on-my-screen?

Yeah thanks, I honestly hadn't tried Google.

You know what's difficult about Googling for Scheme-related material? Scheme is a really common word.

Name: Anonymous 2005-08-20 9:25

there are many implementations for scheme

i guess drscheme is okay. it seems to have a gui

Name: Anonymous 2005-08-20 10:34

Yeah I'm using that. I don't want a programming environment with a gui, I want libraries to create a gui. Hell I could just use SWIG to wrap all the Tcl functions, but surely someone must have done that already? I don't want to have to learn Tcl and SWIG in one day...

May I ask, what do you plan to do with a GUI library for Scheme?  Wouldn't it be a bitch to program an interactive display with a functional language?

Name: Anonymous 2005-08-20 23:54

DrScheme apparently uses an object system for the GUI library

Actually a functional language is really suited to it. Because functions are first class, you can just pass them to the widget to execute on an event. With OO langs you have to go to the trouble of creating a trivial class containing the code you want to execute and then pass an instance of the class to the widget. I know, I've been unfortunate enough to use swing and awt in Java :(

Oh and to answer your question I want to display a mandelbrot. ASCII just doesn't give enough detail...

OK well I'm learning MrEd since it comes with DrScheme. It sounded lame in the description, but actually it's just like any other toolkit. Complete with custom object system, including the necessity to override methods for event handling... bleh :(

might want to try PLT scheme

There was that new commercial game made in Scheme. It used Gambit-C for compiler and direct bindings to opengl/openal.

It's actually for real. It's called QuantZ, it's a puzzle game, it has pretty decent art/sound/controls.

I think anyone with half a brain would understand that you can use any language to write a game, even for fancy games
You'd be surprised that there's people writing real games in braindead BASIC-like scripting languages.
There's no doubt that a Lisp would be hundreds of times more expressive than that.

What makes games good isn't just coding, it's art, gameplay, design... Just coding a good engine is a tiny part of the task.
