I think you need to play with the "display" CSS attribute.

1) html and css is not programming
2) tables aren't shit, they simply shouldn't be used for the layout of the page, only to display content in a table (duhhh), or to simplify the layout of some elements such as forms.
3) float is shit, stop using that shitty attribute
