Libertarianism - A dying belief

Why is libertarianism bad?

Why are there so few libertarians?

It must be bad, because so many refuse it.

I would like to believe that the conditions found in a truly free market would inspire humanity as a whole to greatness, but I can’t. Aside from the problems of instigating such an economic state without facing self-contradiction in the organizational process (Rawls’ “original position”, anyone?), I can’t help but feel that incentives to create, think, and produce will not have much effect on the majority of people. Base pleasure, comfort, and subscription to the herd mentality seem to be the prime motivators of the average person. If everyone wanted to be the kind of person who listens to Hofstadter audiobooks on their smartphone while biking from their business to their private charity, we wouldn’t be in the global societal shit-hole we are now.

Libertarian society is a dream world that can only be reached by eugenics and/ or other self-contradicting tampering with society to bring about a "fair" starting position for people who will be motivated by economic incentives to produce at or near capacity.
