It has been confirmed.

Many upstanding scientists such as Peter Higgs agree that Richard Dawkins is turning atheism into a kind of religion, and not the kind that does charity drives or is the focal point of a community's marriages and funerals, the wacky nunu kool aid chugging tin foil hatting batshit insane cult kind of religion, ironically the very kind of fundamentalist religion that Dawkins claims atheism will give you immunity from.

20th century history and the lingering communist regimes still around should have proven this theory of his wrong, just as the lack of evidence of god trumps many theist religions, however he had a chance, he could have admitted his doctrine is a kind of religion, claimed atheism makes someone less likely to become fundamentalist and that this particular brand of atheism is not the same as the others as mainstream religions often do, however he has failed. In some kind of giant projective defense mechanism it turned out he was little better than the fundamentalists.

It is an important point to distinguish between someone who doesn't believe in god and just says "yeah, technically I'm an atheist" and someone who is part of a collective group that follows some kind of atheism based ideology.

That said, some people find other things to worship instead.

There are several ways to describe this problem in the abstract without referring to a specific ideology, extremism, fundamentalism or tribalism might be good ways.

This seems pretty obvious now, I guess this is what this issue boils down to.

The question remains though, why is it so prevalent in our society?
