In reality, I've heard only a very small handful of states ever try to force people away from a religion in the name of "atheism". In all of those cases, the states in question were not really trying to eradicate religion, but to establish a new one. One where the State takes God's place.

Case in point: North Korea. Where the Kim dynasty is the centre of personality cults that really are religion in all but name.

Same with Soviet, and the Lenin Mausoleum. Are you sure there's not one little bit of religion in there? Really, really sure?

I also consider agnostics and deists to be in the "non-theist" category being that both also don't have belief in a "personal god". One minute someone could use god as an excuse for their behavior, another they could claim they're doing it to create a utopia, just because something fits the evidence doesn't mean it is necessarily the truth, you have to use deduction to narrow down the possibilities and gain a more accurate view of the situation or you're just speculating.

More likely theism and crime have poverty in common, as a shared cause, people in desperate poverty are more likely to be driven to crime and fall to their knees and pray. I'm sure there are instances where theism can be connected to crime, like most things though there are a wide range of factors at play and more than one reason why someone might do something, the correlation with poverty is just far stronger.

Perhaps if poverty was factored out we could see more clearly the relationship between theism and unethical behavior, I've never met a Dawkinite who has reached this far down the reasoning process though.

Let's just say, I've yet to see an angry crowd burn down an embassy over a drawing of Dawkins...

I would not hesitate to say that not a day goes by where someone commits a crime either directly attributed to their religion or defended by it. The body count is literally uncountable, vast is the number. The recent lethal riots over some insulting amateur video is the perfect example of murder, assault, destruction of private property etc., over fucking nothing, over imaginary sky wizards: some of the most pointless deaths a person can possibly imagine. You can point to a general hatred of America as being a compounding factor but undoubtedly without religious self-righteousness that demands blood none of this would have happened. They'd just disapprove and move on, the same thing everyone else does when confronted with an offensive YouTube video.

I mean, really, wow, I could go on but by now you should be convinced that theism does radically change behaviour. There are no atheist suicide bombings, that's for sure.
