It's basically just nationalism with a more acceptable name. Although it's used a lot more to guilt trip people into doing things that no sane person would approve of, like passing the Patriot Act which implies that you're not patriotic if you dare oppose it.

As animals, we do need some kind of group mentality, an «us vs them», to form an identity; what-I-am vs what-I-ain't. This is basic psychology.
That said, however, patriotism/nationalism is a retarded group mentality with a stupidly artificial divide. And it doesn't get any better when some J. Random Douchebag starts dictating shit like what I can eat, what music I can listen to or what Invisible Sky Wizard I can pray to, or not, based solely on where I was born.

Fortunately for you this doesn't happen. Intelligent people regard those who insist that their country is the greatest ever, despite heaps of evidence that prove otherwise, with a helping of scepticism and think of ways to improve.
