Why is it that so many people deny raw facts?

The holocaust happened
Ron Paul isn't going to win
We have too many people in prison
The free market needs regulations
Guns are dangerous and should be banned
A woman should be able to have an abortion
Free healthcare has worked for France
Iran getting a nuclear bomb would be dangerous
Prostitution is harmful to women

Much of this seems to be driven by an insane urge to have Hitler be the be-all-end-all Ender Of All Things Good, Father (And Doer) Of All Things Bad.

When this is being driven to ridiculous levels, it's not cos Hitler was any kind of "misunderstood saint" or any of that bullshit. He really was a brutal dictator, not to mention a warmonger and a criminal.

But just as the Soviets had a problem with explaining why he was so Bad, without also hitting themselves...
...there's also problematic similarities between Hitler and the West.

- American soldiers had defeated a nation full of signs that said "No Jews". They came home to a nation full of signs that said "No Blacks".
- The Nazis didn't like Gypsies. Nor do modern-day politicians. Or their voters. (Take anything you can't say about Jews with impunity, say them about Gypsies, see what now happens. "Cricket... cricket...")
- The Nazis burned books. Just like the Catholic Church had done before. After the war, no Beatles records of Harry Potter books were ever burned, nohoho.
- The Nazis used the label "Entartede Kunst" ("Degenerate Art") about any art they didn't like. Not at all like what cartoons or rock'n'roll went through in the 50s, right? Or VCRs and heavy rock in the 80's? Dungeons&Dragons? Or filesharing and anonymous nowadays? The name FoxNews ring a bell?
- People that had been jailed for homosexuality by the Nazis, were not freed. They were transferred to Allied jails instead.
- Contrary to popular superstition, Hitler was a Christian. And he wanted the church to have power in his land. Which is completely different from how right-wingers in the US are having religious support.

I could mention how the Nazis invented delayed TV broadcasts, but that was for technological reasons (still no VCRs, so they had to shoot events on film, have it developed, and then transmit that), rather than fear of wardrobe malfunctions, or naughty words, or any other world-shattering calamities fit to reduce WWIII to a foot-note.
