People join religions, cults, clubs, and other social groupings because they are of evolutionary benefit to their members; they help their members deal with hardships of life, sometime literally survive. They have provided a social safety net long before governments started taking on that role. By definition, they focus on their members, sometimes to the detriment of non-members. This goes all the way back to when our survival depended on co-operation with our fellow cave dwellers.
Christianity, Islam, and other so called so-called mainstream religions were just a few of many cults and tribes two thousand years ago. The reason why they are now so dominant is because they were a little more effective at forcing their members to co-operate with each other (Ten Commandments, etc.) . As a result, their membership grew faster than that of the other cults.
There is a glimmer of hope in this for humanity. One day, we might realize we all belong to one global tribe and start helping each other instead of fighting each other. Of course, the probability of us self-destructing as the Capitalism forces us to compete with each other is way higher.

The Christians are trying to export their religion so it makes sense. Jews are trying to unify and support each other. It makes sense that they feel the need to do this since they have been constantly harassed and abused throughout history and have survived only because they stick together so well.
