Technically, solar worship was tied very much to solar deities or deities who, over the years, were associated, not always thanks to interpretation of their original stories, with "sun-like" qualities.  It was never about "worshiping the sun;" the sun was seen as a source of power, even before we knew how many megatons explode on/in it daily.  Appeasement of the sun and attainment of these sun-like qualities was little more than human self-importance by deification; there was never really a "solar worship," just worship that used sun imagery for its own selfish means or explanations; perhaps awe and wonder but still, in the end, exploitation.
