I have read a couple of essays that attribute the growing Anglophobia in Scotland to that film. If I start on that film I wont stop, I despise historical inaccuracy and Mel Gibson has it in the for the English - as he does for gays, jews and non-whites, if you've seen the patriot you'll know how much he hates us.
I wouldn't be surprised if some people (anyone, not specifically Scots) base there understanding of what went on in that film and not realise that the Scots and the English were committing atrocities to each other, taking land from each other etc. for centuries and the union process took centuries and was peaceful and fair and came about because of a Scottish king. (all on wiki, all of the article is cited).

Its a historical thing, since the Romans were here there has been defences against the Scottish like a big wall to keep them out of England which they did not like, then when we (English) weren't getting invaded by another European country we decided to give them some back.
And its been hammer and tong ever since, Basically the British occupy Scotland and have forced peace upon them for centuries now, How would you feel, if you can't go around killing people for 200 years.

Yes, I know, we basically built modern civilization and so everyone else in the world feels threatened by this except maybe the few places in the world that aren't fucked up culturally, Finland, Switzerland, asian tigers and maybe the minority of logical people scattered across the world who have to keep their opinions to themselves.
Everyone else though has a chip on their shoulder, just look at how South America rallied behind Argentina in support of their unjust undemocratic claims on the Falkland islands with no regard for the wishes of the population there, outwardly they claim to value human rights and ethics to be diplomatic because they need our technology and services but when we conflict with their interests they reveal their true nature. Meanwhile we go to excessive lengths to stop racism and promote acceptance of other cultures here in the UK and give 1% of our GDP to foreign aid as well as private charity on top of that. We do nothing but give give give and they do nothing but take take take. It can't go on forever, we're only human, the question is how will we teach them the error of their ways? Should we do something to remind them our compassion is not a sign of weakness?
