From what i hear, there are important pipelines running through syria that could mean a competition with Russia in supplying Europe with gas.

Syrias proximity to Israel sets off fears that Western governments / Zionist regime in Israel will exploit the situation.

In the face of american imperialism, I imagine many countries see democracy as a route for America to corrupt their societies / an avenue for america/israel to get more of an influence/ foothold in the middle east. A wall of resistance forms that is bolstered by Russia, China, Iran and others to prevent that. At the expense of many lives.
