They might find some physical evidence and it is better to send death row criminals to the work camps because it is as much a fitting punishment as death and it provides a source of cheap labor for the economy.

You're right, the purpose of inflicting suffering is to serve as a deterrent, not inflict suffering for the sake of it, we should include school trips to prisons to show kids and petty criminals what will happen if they commit a felony.

I actually have nothing against most criminal gangs that don't cross the line, there are many prison education programs that have succesfully reformed them and introduced them to the corporate world where their skills can be fully utilized, I'd like to see more of this. There is still that need for a deterrent though and they ought to work as well.
