I don't support Obama because he's black, nor do I do so because I believe he is progressive. Obama is not a progressive leftist, he's a pro-business centrist.
He has proposed good plans for jump-starting the economy and has actually met some success in the face of an overwhelmingly obstructionist minority party. He supports middle eastern democracy and does so without the expensive and long process of occupation and nation building (i.e. help the people in their revolution then allow them to take over). He got a bill passed through congress to reform our broken healthcare system, the bill's not perfect but it's a good start.
He revitalized the car industry with cash for clunkers and promoted investment in alternative energy, as a result of which wind power is now the second cheapest fuel source in some parts of the country, beaten only by natural gas which we can only see losing ground in the future to wind. Extracting natural gas is costly, it's only so cheap now because nobody bothered with it before and the price of other conventional fuel sources has risen.
He does have his faults though, extending the patriot act, giving a federal execution to a man without trial. Failing to close gitmo, no support for marijuana legalization even for medicinal use, letting businesses not pay taxes (although that happens under every president, it's still not the change he campaigned on) and other things I can't even think about.
My point is that he's not perfect, no president or politician ever is. However he has clearly done a lot of good for this nation and his administration has been a net positive for the nation.
