This might be more of a historical question, but definitely politics related. I'd like some examples of how a democracy transforms into a dictatorship, like what happened to Rome and Germany. I need some historic examples of former democracies, and what caused their change.

Athens became a centralized monarchy of sorts a couple of times, though in all cases it actually succeeded in returning to democracy. Athens was fairly small though, it's easier for a smaller state to be accountable to the public, and the public of athens wanted democracy.
I wouldn't be looking for results though, that'll just bias your research. You might find most democracies suceed until simply being overthrown by a coup or military defeat.
If you're doing this for America you have to remember America is a republic more than a democracy.

The rise of fascism in europe, Spain, Portugal, Italy and of course Germany and some of the dictatorships in South America, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. It might be useful to look at countries that did not turn into dictatorships like Peru and Czechoslovakia.
