Jack up taxes on all imports

Why don't we simply jack up taxes up to 60 percent on all imports?

After all,Americans will only buy the cheapest crap right?

So what if we make American products the cheapest by taxing everyone's products?

Things should ideally be made where it is most economical to make them, maybe in some situations the state should act to prevent weapons sales to shitty 3rd world countries and so forth but for peaceful democracies there is no reason to have anything other than free trade. A business is a business, it is not a sacred inviolable way of life, if producing copper in Chile at the source of copper ore is more economical than producing copper in the US then it is unfair for US copper plants to force the rest of the country to subsidize their uneconomical business by making them pay more for copper.
