Extreme right + Extreme left = ?

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-08 19:19

I agree with the far right when it comes to taxation and illegal immigration.. and I agree with the far left when it comes to education, religion, drugs, sex, etc.

Does that still make me a moderate?  I don't have many "moderate" beliefs..  only ones on the far extreme of the spectrum..

An (American) political moderate combines two value systems.  The first is a balance borrowing some positions of both the left and the right.  The second is a fickle judgment system that waffles a position such that there is a complicated checklist to decide when something applies or not; in this way, "both sides" are represented.  An example for better or for worse is probably abortion where rape or the endangerment of either the mother or the child in conception can be considered justifiable situations for the procedure.

A third, hopefully never encountered, is an individual who believes an issue can be "too loaded" and will take a position only after it has become "easy."

I'm kinda in the same boat.  I do think that we need to be much more serious about eliminating poverty and fixing the environmental mess we're making.  However, I don't think terrorism is best fought by the liberal "please don't hit me again" stance.  I don't think welfare should be a handout -- we'd do much better if we could get people skilled enough to not need welfare anymore.

What turns me off to both wings however is the notion that compromise is a dirty word and that the other side is the enemy.  Go read reader comments on politico -- there's no room even for debate anymore.  And I think that could quite easily lead to revolution on one side or another.

sounds to me like a left leaning libertarian

Pushing things to their "logical conclusion" never works. Instead of taking extreme measures based on some theory you should instead take a pragmatic perspective and base your decisions on the consequences of your policies.

For instance legalising drugs that are mostly harmless while restricting the drugs that turn people into fucked up emaciated thieves/whores.

Extreme right + Extreme left = ?
= why the traditional "left-right" map is made of fail and dipped in AIDS.

One small step in the (somewhat) right direction:

the destruction of the black market for drugs greatly outweighs the possible conciquences of legalizing hard drugs

look at portugal, lower drug use than ever.

Don't change these.
