It was not a slur for black people. It was originally a word used by whites to describe poor and ignorant people with no education originally other whites. Over time it turned into a slur for blacks because white slave owners seen their slaves as stupid and ignorant. Thus the term nigger. No it does not mean black. You are just showing how ignorant you are. Negro means black in Spanish. Nigger is not the same. Nigger is used for uneducated people and people who no one would care if they died. However over time the word nigger came to be used for slaves and thus got used as a racial slur for blacks. But it was not always a racial slur against blacks. The word nigger predates slavery.

So please, instead of politically correcting them look at the context the words are used and try to give insight into it. All this PC stuff you are doing is senseless. Words mean their definition. If someone defines nigger differently from you that's how they will interpret it. That's why we have dictionary, so everyone has the same definition and there is no confusion as to their meaning.
