First, every study I've seen has shown that atheistic societies are FAR less violent than religious ones. Also, surveys of prisons show that 99.5-99.9% of inmates are religious, even in countries with large atheist populations. There's got to be something to that.
Second, we, as a mostly religious global society, are brainwashing our children with irrational, ignorant, and hateful bullshit. Religions punish skepticism, curiosity, pride, and self worth, replacing them with dogmatic faith, shame, and bigotry. Religion tears apart everything that makes these kids humane and builds a character foundation out of fear.
I could go on for hours. The point is, we're abusing them in the most horrible way imaginable. We're stunting their intellectual growth and crippling them emotionally. We are quite literally raping their minds when they are at their most vulnerable. Why isn't this illegal? Where's the outrage?
Do you really fail to see how this might possibly be having some sort of effect on the stability of society as a whole? Abolishing religion wouldn't end all violence, sure. There's still going to be power struggles and such. But don't you think that would be a MAJOR step in the right direction? Without the constant distraction of religion, we might actually be able to then solve some of the causes of those other conflicts.
