Yesterdays state elections in Salzburg and Carinthia mainly affected the media coverage in Austria. The big winner was the BZÖ in Carinthia. The orange party, which was founded by Jörg Haider, received impressive 45,48 percent of votes. This is even more than Jörg Haider could ever get. In Salzburg the Socialdemocrats lost 5,84 percent, but stayed the strongest [opposition] political force.
The triumph of the BZÖ in Carinthia was a big surprise. Austrias biggest newspaper “Kronen Zeitung” declared in todays issue “the last victory of Jörg Haider”. Carinthias minister president Gerhard Dörfler said that “the voter has spoken a clear word.”
Losers of the election in Carinthia were the Socialdemocrats. They expected a much better result, and some of them even an election victory. But the reality was different. It turned out to be a true disaster. The Socialdemocrats prime candidate Reinhart Rohr was talking about a huge disappointment.
Socialdemocratic disenchantment also in Salzburg. The party reached the leading position again, but had to accept a massive loss of votes. Winner of the election in Salzburg was the Freedom Party. They won 4,4 percent.
