Being treated to be equal to men is not only about right but also duties and responsibilities. The pressure is always too severe for women who just wanted to live happily.
As for legal institution, Japanese women are treated equal to Japanese men, or more equal. It is only customarily on some private level that Japanese women are gently protected and reluctant to make a hasty advance into the corporate society.
But in fact, it's clear to me who live in Japan that more Japanese women establish their own business company than women in the West do. The Japanese women are quite entrepreneurial, that's what the West is yet to discover.

I just read this whole thread....I'm a Canadian girl who spent a year in Japan.
Japanese guys really didn't hit on me, and when they did- they were 10 or 15 years older which creeped me out.
I do however have a strong lust for Japanese men and a fascination with all things Japan. I am desperate to go back, to date Japanese men,
and Yeah, I can actually speak Japanese.

She (if she is a she) does actually have a point. A fair number of Japanese men prefer to date Japanese women. When I lived over there I taught English at a language school and occasionally I would be asked if I came here for the women. I'd tell them no, then ask them if they liked western women more and almost every time they'd say "no, I like long black hair, like only Japanese women have."
