The biggest mystery is why the fuck they keep fighting over that shitty piece of land.  It has no natural resources and isn't particularly pretty either.  If they're being assholes because they really believe that land is holy they are sooooooo fucking stupid...

It's Biblical prophecy.  Read through Exodus to Joshua, the Old Testament is about justification for land, by supposed divine right, through any means necessary, including the wholesale slaughter of an entire civilization that lived there.  To them, abandoning the land of Israel is abandoning God's will. 

Some of the more extreme adherents are planning on bringing back Old Testament law including animal sacrifice.

Would have made sense in '48 - in the period where Israel buttraped hordes of Arabs repeatedly, the national identity was formed, and it was no longer a "fake" country. Suck it.
