Core Inflation

Why does the US gov't still bother to report this?  Do they not realize that most of us are not stupid enough to fall for it and ignore the extremely overpriced food and gas we've been getting lately?  When we can't afford anything else other than food and gas, a 2% core inflation is at best meaningless, at worst insulting.
