Why does the US support Israel?

I can't think of any advantages to the US supporting Israel, but I can think of a whole bunch of disadvantages.

Why not let israel run game on the middle east?  Since we're so chummy with them they'd be a lot easier to deal with in obtaining oil.  Really, why protect the rest of the fucking sand apes?  Do they do anything that helps humanity at all?
