Why does the US support Israel?

I can't think of any advantages to the US supporting Israel, but I can think of a whole bunch of disadvantages.

Israel doesn't make America do anything.
Quite to the contrary, America holds the reigns on Israel.
If it wasn't for America holding Israel back, most of the Middle East would be wiped out by Israel.
