Why does the US support Israel?

I can't think of any advantages to the US supporting Israel, but I can think of a whole bunch of disadvantages.

Israel is an egalitarian 1st world democracy, Arab citizens make up 20% of the population and have full universal suffrage including affirmative action style policies in their favor, although Israel has a few bigots like every other country, Israel is not a "jewish state".
