During the 80s coal miners in the UK expected the taxpayer to support an industry that was no longer profitable so they could keep their jobs and have higher wages. Socialists convinced people that the cause of their low wages were evil capitalists refusing to pay them enough, economy reality came tumbling down on them like aton of bricks however when the strikes did not cripple the UK economy since there were other more abundant and cheaper sources of coal which could be imported easily.
