After India's independance, state socialist economic policies stagnated the economy for a period of 25 years, despite plenty of space for industrialisation the wage of the average worker increased by only 1% a year. During the Indian emergency a coalition of moderates, liberals and socialists were formed to unite against the current corrupt authoritarian INC regime and they won the 1977 election. It was not long before the socialists were calling for revolution and making threats unless the state employed their marxist visions. Their incompetence, saber rattling and ridiculous economic policies resulted in them losing the election against the authoritarian regime they were supposed to replace in 1980, and their bizarre idealism caused instability and violence to echo throughout the 80s. In 1982 prime minister Rajiv Gandhi split from the INC's statist policies and began reforming India's socialist economic policies, further economic liberalisation during the 90s opened the country up to the world and triggered rapid economic development. Again the liberals BAAWWWed over things like unemployment and in 1996 an unstable offshoot of the Janata Party was elected, the BJP, but after yet another 3 years of madness the INC were re-elected again.
