Look at the policies of George W. Bush, he's the perfect example.

Can't you see obvious sarcasm, I mean, how can someone seriously think George W. Bush is socialist?

economic collectivism, trying to make everyone as equal as possible through redistribution of wealth and state intervention in the economy on behalf of the people. nationalisation of resources and services in preference to privatisation. "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need"

trying to make everyone as equal as possible through the redistributions of wealth, except for the people running the government.  they're the only people who get to be rich.

Liar.
But since I have some time to waste, here goes demagoguery:
As you should know it all started with Adam Smith. He wrote some philosophical stuff on economics blah blah blah.
Some time later Marx read it and extended the labour theory of value based on his historical materialism. Simplified it says that the value of everything is determined by the amount of labour involved in the production. Therefore he argued that production should be carefully planned to speed up the process and achieving a classless society/communism ahead of its time(in his eyes it was inevitable - a historical process). This extends to dictatorship of the proletariat, seizing means of production etc. etc.
Too bad for him that marginalism has largely replaced his economical theory (however, it also includes the labour theory of value to some extent) rendering everything based on it obsolete. The Russians still tried it and failed only a short time after only to change their policy to do-what-the-party-says.
Marxism is dead as of today. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union all former far left parties live on as populists doomed to saying nay to everything.
What you really want for your modern political ideas homework are the social democrats (or "liberals" in the US). They all started off as socialist opposition in democratic countries and gradually shifted to the right throughout history. All countries have a major party that is social democratic.

Whoops, I overlooked the Americans.
The Democratic Party has gone a different way but then again everything is different in the US.

I also want to add that I don't endorse social democracy.
They're a bunch of eco-furfags. My advice to write about them was because you already chose left wing politics.

Collective ownership.

Communism is the step after Socialism where supposedly the society is so altruistic that ownership itself becomes obsolete and "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" becomes a true reality. It would probably be best to distinguish between the 2.

Of course the point of collective ownership is about putting the means of production under the control of the workers so they can redistribute profits evenly. Also worth mentionning are comparisons of this with similiar business arrangements in the private sector such as building societies.
