Ideology (lying) aside, is it because we're talking about people who, deep in their hearts, believe that human thought is a consequence of souls rather than neural computation? Since all souls have the same (magical, ill-defined) properties, clearly everyone is really alike, and differences in performance must be the result of social influences?
