Why Jews and Asians are smarter

Name: Anonymous 2008-01-20 18:51

Language is a cognitive exercise practiced daily in culture.  A language with loose rules, though adaptive, will bring about a lax society as people become used to complacency in speech and thought.  English tries to borrow words and change grammar to fit its needs, showing a passive psychology of accommodation rather than strict logic.  Various slang and dialect, including so called "black vernacular english" shows how a lazy style of communication leads to unorganized and simplistic behavior.

The more complex languages, such as Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, and Russian have strict rules that must be followed to communicate.  Each sentence is more representative of a math formula or a logic statement, clearly defining its intent.  This gives cultures a greater adaptiveness to mathematics, computer science and engineering, mentally preparing citizens for tasks with complex rules of logic, including electronics and programming.  The amount of complexity in each language does not have to make sense for an outsider, but it does need to follow rules.  Deviations in spoken vs written language are noted as rules, just as one reads a technical manual to understand any quirks in order to remember them and learn from them.

Japanese is somewhat complex, but can be learned with dedication.  Chinese is more complex, with many more characters and tones to memorize.  Hebrew is like an impenetrable puzzle, using its own complexity to maintain a set of rules that seem illogical and unreasonable to outsiders, but once learned, these rules become the foundation of its communication.

The Torah, written in Hebrew, has most of its content dedicated to stringent, picky rules that seem unreasonable or unethical, but are justified using a twisted form of logic.  Judaism persists for centuries due to its focus on rules, no matter how bizarre or nonsensical they seem to outsiders.  This emphasis on rules creates an emphasis on behavior, one of logic through justification, where normal logic will not suffice.  Compare to Scientology and LDS culture, where language influences thought through regular indoctrination sessions, with church leaders claiming to be rational, reasonable, and logical.  The activities of Jews in Israel and America is based on this inner mode of taught logic.  Any unethical practices are based on a psychology of logic that circumvents reason, allowing Jews to act according to their own psychology in spite of others, much like a computer virus.

Replace "are smarter" with "have higher mean IQs".

lol total neglect of within group differences, theory is fail

The communal mentality is fostered by culture, unlike the US where individuality is stressed more often.  Look at China, their society is based on being a productive member to serve the larger whole, and the huge population leads to group based actions that are more efficient.  Jews have a very strong network of community,  and many Jews gather in clusters.

"Language influences psychology" is still a valid thesis

Everything influences everything. It's causal links we're interested in. By the looks of it there are no magical properties to a language that make people more intelligent and since the same languages can either be used in a dumbed down manner, such as ebonics, or using a large vocabulary which allow the communication of complex concepts in a concise logical manner, such as formal english, the properties of certain languages can be recreated using other languages.

Since English has the largest vocabulary and everyone's using it anyway it should be made the universal language and a plaque placed in front of the UN building stating clearly once and for all white anglo-saxon protestants are superior for creating this language and if anyone complains they should be branded racist and denied opportunities for education and employment.

So what you're implying is an ontogenetic phenomenon based on culture-specific language. I.e., it is not a genetic outcome.

I agree that language differences, coupled with other cultural practises (study of philosophy, dedication to school work) could produce differences in IQ.

One theory on the elevated intelligence of Ashkenazi Jews is that it's a form of sexual selection, where the more intelligent males had more partners as they were seen as more successful.

Those which obtained the most moneys were more likely to have children?

Jewish parents start teaching their kids to read at the age of 2 and are overbearing for the rest of their life.

Whoever wrote the first post is a reductionist, who obviously doesn't truly understand all the underlying factors in this issue. I would be so bold as to suggest that the author is in fact manipulating evidence in order to serve their own agenda (i.e. to "prove" that their race- Jewish/ Asian is more "intelligent" than others). Perhaps dear sir/ madam you are bitter as a result of racism towards your Jewish or Asian ethnicity? If so then this sort of tactic (being racist yourself) is not going to work; if people judge you for your race, then more fool them for their bigotry. Rise above their level, by not retorting in a similarly dispicable manner.

It would have been a more useful post to comment on things that differentiate Hebrew and Japanese from Roman languages. For example, newspaper Hebrew is unpointed -- it has no vowel marks added to it which in turn means that the words must be understood in context. Hebrew has been a language of puns for this reason since its inception.

Kanji are complex enough that printed materials typically feature phonetic translations next to them. Until standardization efforts after WWII the number of kanji was in five digits. On top of this, two adjacent kanji are often spoken as a different word than the two root words those kanji individually mean. That word is only learnable through context.

Both of these linguistic situations require a very good memory. However, English also requires a good memory because its mongrel heritage and non-phonetic nature results in people having to internally master conflicting sets of rules for spelling and pronunciation without a guiding force. English didn't even have the concept of standardized spelling until the eighteenth century.

It's tempting to assume that your first language controls how you think.
