The military itself isn't that large, (numbers wise), it's rather the spending on technologies that we don't need, or rather don't use since there are not enough people there to use them. For every five normal soldiers in the United States military there is one officer, that is another one of the overbalanced parts of the military.
good point! we spend fucking half a billion on a single F-22 that only holds one bomb and has to fly low to drop it when we could have simply used the venerable and inexpensive b-52 bombers that fly high and can drop dozens of accurate, JDAMS.

You see these days the problem with the military is its bloated budget, if it's going to be fixed we need to cut down on spending money for weaons that will not be used or even seen, and if you are to fix the militaries problems with so little staff they should slowly withdraw from the war and try to build some of the credibilty they lost with the past five "conflicts."
We're building submarines and aircraft carriers to fight the war on terror.

To meet current needs in Iraq and Afghanistan our military is in fact too small. by a lot. probably the only thing that will keep us outta Iran is a draft would be required. Iran is 3 times the size (geographicly and in population) of Iraq and the people are far more unified (very high percentage Shia, not the problem 'islamo-fascist' wahabbi sunni asswipes). an invasion of Iran would be a complete fucking disaster because our military is far too small.
also, we're looking ahead to China.

The problem is with these damn kids in the government these days is that they think that a war can be won by throwing money at it, money and lots of technological mumbo-jumbo. Well, the only way to win a real mans war is to throw lots of warm bodies at it. Throwing lots and lots of people at the problem is sure to solve it.

america's military is designed to take on other "real" army's but countrys no longer solve their problems with wars they use trade and economics to fuck others over. "wars" are only started against much inferiour states to prove a point or to nonja some oils.
most of america's military is obsolete especially the marine corps and army, aswell as most of the navy. to fight the wars of today a reasonable air force, a few aircraft carriers. small army and alot more special forces. whereas the US currently has a fucking huge navy, fucking huge airforce, fucking huge army and a fucking huge bill. and i dont think anyone can say its working out for them?

We have relatively small military forces, just a lot of high tech useless equipment. I do agree that we need to cut down to just the Navy the Airforce and the Marines. Create an armored division for the new joint task force maybe?

I'm Australian. We're fucked if we ever get invaded, even by indonesia or malaysia. So I can't see why we bother either. Especially when Russia/US/China/others (in that order of proliferation) have 1000s of nukes either way. The Australian army is only good for dealing with crises and in a diplomatic capacity (e.g. guarding Japanese engineers, kissing US ass)
