UK is going to shit, whether due to Muslims, Chav culture, boredom or fuck knows what else. I wouldn't call it a fair comparison at this point in time.
Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Japan all have very strict gun control laws, yet minuscule rates of violent crime compared to the USA. I doubt any of those nations are "sinking into fascism" any faster then the US currently is.
Gun control doesn't have to be perfect, once firearms become scarce enough, they are pulled out of reach of most dumb, spur of the moment common crooks and only retained by much more careful major organised crime groups. You can easily run or overpower some fool with a knife or club when you're full of fear, but you can't run from a gun.
You can't hope to protect yourself from a hostile government with guns. Every gun-nut seems to imagine going down in a blaze of glory, defending your property from evil gubment brown-shirts when it makes far more sense to covertly assassinate you while you're going about your daily life, out-gun you with paramilitary forces or simply blow up your base of operations with a cruise missile.
African and Middle Eastern nations have plenty of guns, however where the fuck is their "Liberty"?. If the masses are brainwashed into believing in their masters or outright apathy, no amount of shooting can change that. Guns can't change human nature.
