You cited the return of Hong Kong to China - while this was strongly favoured by British businessmen who feared the adverse reaction from Beijing that any delay on surrendering Hong Kong to China might have, the reality is that the transfer increased China's power at the West's expense. In the end, it can be honestly assessed as nothing more than that.
