I like ratios. Let's get some political ratios lined up here, of course these ratios are guidelines and not concrete fact, there are many other factors.
This is the J curve, but I added the value "S" to explain why the Y=X^2 shape graph is shifted to the right.
C = Population's level of compliance with the state.
F = Levels of freedom.
S = Population's submission in the face of oppression from a particular state.

C = S(F-S)^2
C=(F+S)^2 gives the general shape of the Y=X^2 with a twist being that the curve begins shifted to the right and as a population goes from subservient (S=1) to defiant (S=0) the curve shifts to the left. Because oppression is more effective the more subservient the population, (F-S)^2 is multiplied by S.
