First off, the Cato Institute is very much a mixed bag. Secondly, how does that article in any way say to you "ideological, unreasonable, and generally irresponsible." If anything, the article is overly favorable to the libertarian point of view. Maybe according to YOU libertarianism is all those things, but not according to that article.

Thats generally it. Libertarianism tries to pull in the youth and the academics with their liberal social policies (Drugs, Guns, Free Speech, Fucking just about anything, basically the "who the fuck cares about whether you're gay or not" stance) and supplement it with Ultra-Ideological Laissez-Faire Economic policy.
Considering the injustices of "Neo-liberal" organizations such as the world bank and the WTO inflicted on poor nations, this is where much of the voters lose interest in the libertarian movement/party/sausagefest.
most parties have some sort of basic ideology as their foundation, an ideology that they have taken their view on what humans are and how they should be treated and how they act from, but those things change alot over time, they get watered out by being in power and being in touch with the reality. Libertarians actually have an ultra-ideological policy, but then they aren't in power, just like most other parties with ultra-ideological policies.
