If you were being held hostage in a locked/ chained up building, what would you do to save yourself and your friends?

When they first took us hostage I would wait a few seconds until the moment when they are changing objectives from pacify hostages to whatever they are planning to do. When this moment comes I would yell "SPARTAAAAAAA", charge the nearest gunman and die gloriously.
Much like the executions in Iraq. you are going to die anyway... why not try?
i would do my best to shank him with a dull pencil. if that was my only offensive option.

I have a habit of carrying a textbook or two in my backpack so if I found myself trapped in a room with the gunman, I'd lug it right into his face, hoping to knock him out and perhaps take the gun away.
lol. good point. but you might be able to bleed on them as you die.
lets assume they ae executing a hostage every hour and they have already killed and you are next and you only have five minutes.
is that a good enough scenario?

If death is guaranteed, that is different.
But why would they even have hostages if they were just going to kill them? You could attack them and get shot up, and then a minute after the swat team bursts in and shoots the gunmen dead.
There is almost never a point in trying to be a hero.
most heroes never survive... assuming these are well trained mercenaries. would you stand up to save your friends?

I just don't envision dying, and then having a videotape of me attacking an AK gunman with a -pencil- on the 6:00 news as a fitting memory of my existence.
