The OP is attacking liberals, he isn't defending a particular ideal. You are mistaking the current situation in Europe with the situation in Europe 80 years ago and also forgetting that politics in Britain was much different to politics in the rest of europe. There was in fact an extensive socialist movement in Britain resulting from widespread poverty and later the great depression, the term liberal was used to refer to them.
