Confessions of British Sailors

The "confessions" from British Naval officers that they had indeed entered Iranian waters leave me confused.  Are the sailors being coerced by threat of torture or death?  Shouldn't they have the courage and training to call such a bluff?  Or did the Iranians somehow convince them that they were in fact mistaken and had entered their territory? Or is there a third explanation, that they actually did fuck up and stray across the border.

It seems a bit silly to be wondering about that. They've almost certainly been through torture until they said what was wanted, so the reliability is suspect.

Everybody breaks under torture. No exceptions. It's just a matter of time.

Military personnel are trained to say whatever their captors want in such situations, since nobody with half a brain will believe anything they say when paraded on TV run by crazy theocrats anyway.

I read an interesting article about the difference between British  soldiers and American soldiers.  Some American Marine Sergeant was pretty much calling them pussies for not "defending" themselves.  The author then describes their situation as sitting in two inflatable boats with small arms, surrounded by six or seven gunboats with Mounted Machine Guns, then wonders why they didn't fire on the Iranians when they were told to surrender. 
Hrm, less see here, shortly after the Brits open fire, the Machine guns go off, and 15 people are fucking dead, Britain now has an obligation to go to war, the Iranians feel totally justified, a war starts and lots of people die for 15 people who decided to act tough when the Iranians wanted to fucking flex their nuts.
Americans watch too much fucking Jack Bauer shit, being the tough badass gets innocent people killed and involves your nation in pointless bloodshed.  A soldiers duty to protect his life (at least in the Brit's eyes) does not enable them the priveledge to direct that nations foreign policy.

Are you sure they're trained to confess to anything?  That doesn't really make sense to me; why give even the Iranian people, its government, and its ideological allies the satisfaction of confession?  Iran can't afford war with Britain, there isn't the most remote possibility they'd kill those soldiers.  The Iranian government is stupid and brutal, not insane.

You give them what they want because it's not going to be accepted by the rest of the world anyway, it's only use is propaganda, you also tell them what they want because once you're captured, your options really suck, and your nation (hopefully) understands that you'll talk eventually, and has a contingency plan.

I believe this is the type of escalation that Bush and co has been after all along, its the old Gulf of Tonkin maneuver. The waters between iran and iraq is at least disputed and the only reason for foreign war vessels to patrol it is for provocation. What would the USA do if Venezuela patrolled the waters of cuba, very close and sometime crossing into US territory? Would they accept it as a common mistake, or would they detain all military personnel that they were able?
